Why would LifeMakers host a Spoken Word Competition?

Spoken Word is a movement that is very popular with youth today. Youth who aren't necessarily interested in the mainstream poppy-plastic that is symptomatic of contemporary culture. Why we do our events can be outlined as follows:

1- To Inspire, entertain and educate YOU. We're breaking the school play's monopoly on poetry and taking it back from Shakespeare (Gimme dat!) and making it accessible to everyone. To revive the poetic tradition as a means of cultural interaction and critical reflection. Did you know that at one point in history spoken word was so important that the people held a market for it and the best pieces were written in gold lettering and hung on a holy building?*

2- To Support local artists and encourage real talent by providing a platform from which they can gain access to a wider audience; fostering & cultivating the poetic tradition in Canada.

3- To Engage our community. At a time of bad economics and rampant criticism, we feel our culture encourages us to express ourselves and explore thoughts and ideas with everyone. Getting to know Canada's diverse communities in a culturally neutral activity that allows each tradition to express itself comfortably is certainly a step in the right direction. Plus it's the sickest way to express yourself --seriously.

Think art's cheesy? Check out our message to you inscribed on the Canadian $20 bill, on the opposite side of the Queen:

"Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts??"

- Gabrielle Roy (1909-1983)

(...Bet you never knew that!)
